In Unsafe at Any Speed I mentioned risk compensation effect as an explanation for why promoting condoms isn’t the answer for the scourge of AIDS. Now someone with far weightier qualifications is saying just that.
According to the CNA article, which I tracked down due to a mention on CNN this morning, “Senior Harvard Research Scientist for AIDS Prevention, Dr. Edward Green, … [says that] science is finding that the media is actually on the wrong side of the issue. In fact, Green says that not only do condoms not work, but that they may be “exacerbating the problem” in Africa.”
The article is worth reading, as is the older article Study Finds Condoms Don’t Work, which deals with simple biological ineffectiveness against most STDs.
[Since then this contribution from AIDS workers in Uganda appeared, citing various studies to support the notion that "Our experience demonstrates that the Church’s position on condom and AIDS is the most reasonable and scientifically sound for the prevention of AIDS epidemics. Uganda has a record of success in the fight against HIV/AIDS."]
